Summary

Yang Wen-li was born on April 4, 767 U.C., and was twenty-nine years old when the series began. He holds the rank of commodore within the Second Fleet of the Free Planets Alliance. Born to a merchant family and inherently pacifistic, Yang never desired a military career. His true aspiration was to become a historian, but lacking the funds for tuition, he enlisted in the army to secure a scholarship. He struggled through officer’s academy due to his apathy, yet managed to form friendships with Dusty Attenborough and Jean Robert Lap. He also encountered music student Jessica Edwards; both Yang and Lap developed feelings for her, but she ultimately chose Lap. Yang accepted this outcome gracefully, and the three remained friends. Shortly after graduation, Yang participated in a battle near the friendly planet El Facil. Due to the incompetence and cowardice of his superiors, the planet was slated for abandonment while a hostile imperial fleet approached. Yang was among the few officers who stayed behind to assist the civilians, successfully orchestrating an evacuation. This feat earned him the titles "the hero of El Facil" and "miracle Yang," securing the envy of his peers and the disdain of his commanding officers. It was during the crisis on El Facil that Yang first became interested in tactics. Despite his subsequent rise in rank, his innovative tactical proposals were frequently rejected by hostile superiors. Although increasingly cynical about the Free Planets Alliance, Yang continued to perform his duties adequately to earn his salary and future pension. Known as "the magician," Yang is a genius tactician and competent strategist. Unlike his proud adversaries, he readily employs trickery in battle. His primary flaw as a commander is his strict adherence to the orders of his superiors. Yang holds democracy in high regard and possesses a clear political philosophy, offering deep insights to those who listen. In his personal life, he appears slothful, notoriously lacking in domestic skills and romantic competence. After serving on the Patorokolos at the start of the narrative, Yang is eventually given command of the Hyperion as the leader of the Thirteenth Fleet, making it his flagship for the conflicts to come.
