Kagura

Summary

Kagura, whose name translates to "god-entertainment," serves as the main female protagonist of Gintama and a core member of the Yorozuya alongside Sakata Gintoki and Shinpachi Shimura. Born on November 3 under the Scorpio zodiac, she is currently aged 19-20, though she was 14 at the series' start and 16 during the Silver Soul Aftermath. Standing 155 cm tall and weighing 40 kg, Kagura appears as a cute human girl in Chinese-style clothing, but she is actually a member of the Yato Clan, one of the most powerful and bloodthirsty Amanto races. The Yato possess highly sun-sensitive, "transparent" skin, forcing Kagura to carry a purple parasol at all times. This parasol is the clan’s signature weapon; her personal one is bulletproof and can fire projectiles from its tip. Her Yato heritage grants her superhuman strength, agility, and rapid regeneration, allowing her to halt a speeding motor-scooter with one hand, catch bullets in her teeth or fingers, and heal from gunshot wounds overnight. However, she struggles to control her immense power, which has led to the accidental deaths of most of her pets, including her first twenty-six, with the sole exception of Sadaharu, her twenty-seventh pet. She cuddles with Sadaharu when depressed and is the only one, aside from Tae, Mone, and Komako, whom Sadaharu obeys. A notable beetle named Sadaharu 28 was later killed by Okita. Kagura also possesses an insatiable appetite, capable of devouring massive amounts of food in seconds. Her taste preferences are simple, favoring sukonbu, rice, and eggs. Kagura arrived on Earth to earn money for her family, consisting of her alien hunter father, Umibouzu, her deceased mother, and her older brother, Kamui, who is now associated with the space pirate group Harusame. After fleeing a gang that ordered her to commit murder, she was run over by Gintoki. Once they helped her cut ties with the gang, she intimidated Gintoki into hiring her. She now resides in the Yorozuya, sleeping in Gintoki’s closet much like Doraemon. Her relationship with Gintoki resembles that of a quirky younger sister and older brother. She is fiercely protective of him, rarely allowing others to bully him despite their frequent personal fights. Trusting his abilities implicitly, she often imitates his crude habits, such as nose-picking and swearing, and frequently cites his bad advice by prefacing statements with "Gin-chan says..." or "Gin-chan told me..." A self-proclaimed tomboy, Kagura engages in games with neighborhood boys and forces her way into their activities despite her blunt manner of speech causing them to shun her. She is a sore loser and, influenced by Gintoki, is not above using petty tricks and manipulation in combat. Lacking conventional decorum, she freely engages in vulgar behaviors like vomiting, spitting, and cussing. In fact, she holds the distinction of being the first and only Weekly Shonen Jump female character to vomit on-screen in an OVA, a feat she has repeated on several occasions. She also displays a bizarre ability to remain calm or detached during high-stress events, once sleeping through a car chase in episode 5. Kagura views Okita, the Shinsengumi captain, as a rival and expresses disgust toward him, though the claim that he likes her is uncertain if it is even canon. She deeply cares for Shinpachi, regarding him as a brother, and shows great respect for his sister, Shimura Tae, addressing her as "Anego." In the original Japanese, she speaks in a dialect stereotypically associated with Chinese immigrants, while the English manga localization features her punctuating sentences with phrases like "yup," "uh-huh," and "nope." Kagura ranked sixth in the last Gintama character popularity poll.
