Summary

Isane Kotetsu serves as the lieutenant of the 4th Division, the medical and relief unit within the Gotei 13, under the command of Captain Retsu Unohana. She is the elder sister of Kiyone Kotetsu, who holds one of the two third seat positions in the 13th Division. While Kiyone is energetic, Isane is typically quiet and observant, yet both sisters share a strong sense of loyalty. Unohana acts as both a mentor and a mother figure for Isane, who is known to suffer from recurring nightmares. These dreams often feature whimsical or odd content, such as an incident involving fish paste, which Unohana sometimes uses for joking purposes. A linguistic distinction exists between the sisters' names: Isane’s given name includes the kanji for "brave," whereas Kiyone’s contains the kanji for "quiet." Her zanpakutō is named Itegumo, which translates to Frozen Cloud (Viz: Frozen Snow). The blade features a guard shaped like a snowflake, and its shikai command is "sprint." Upon activation, two smaller blades extend from the hilt at forty-five-degree angles. Despite possessing this weapon, Isane has never been shown utilizing it in battle. The only recorded instance of her activating Itegumo resulted in her being immediately knocked unconscious by Ichigo.
