Philemon
Summary
Philemon is a benevolent spirit residing in the realm "between consciousness and unconsciousness," tasked with bestowing Personae upon individuals. He appears as a tall man wearing a white mask, while his presence in the waking world is signaled by a golden butterfly. Acting as an ally to the party, he remains a neutral observer who cannot directly interfere with ongoing events. He is engaged in an experiment with his rival, Nyarlathotep, regarding humanity's destiny; while Philemon believes humans can evolve into enlightened, higher beings, Nyarlathotep manipulates circumstances to ensure mankind's destruction. In Persona 3's Hermit Social Link, as well as in references to the Joker, Maya, and Tatsuya, an automated script named PHIL welcomes the protagonist at the start of the game, serving as a nod to Philemon. Atlus stated in a DoubleJump guide interview that the butterfly form indicates Philemon is still watching over Makoto Yuki from Persona 3 and Yu Narukami from Persona 4. This character currently has no assigned voice actors.
