Inaba, a quiet rural town, is thrown into turmoil by a series of mysterious murders. After his parents leave for work overseas, Souji Seta moves to this town to live with his uncle for a year. When he transfers to Yasogami High School, he ends up in a class with the assertive Chie Satonaka, the outgoing Yosuke Hanamura, and the refined Yukiko Amagi. The group quickly forms a close friendship and starts spending more time together outside of school. Chie brings up the local legend of the "Midnight Channel," a strange phenomenon where, under specific conditions of being alone at midnight during a rainstorm, watching a turned-off television reveals one's soulmate in the reflection. At first dismissing it as just a superstition, Souji, Chie, and Yosuke decide to test the theory themselves. But instead of seeing their soulmates, they witness the image of a fellow student who later becomes another victim of the ongoing murders. Realizing the dark truth behind the Midnight Channel, the trio, along with Yukiko, takes matters into their own hands and starts their own investigation. Their search leads them through Inaba and into a hidden, alternate world inside the television itself.
