Summary

Serving as the science officer on the Yamato, Sanada is an earnest and dedicated individual whose strategic insights often prevent the vessel from destruction. He possesses bionic limbs resulting from a childhood tragedy that took his sister’s life, an event that left him harboring deep resentment toward the perceived arrogance of science. A former classmate of Mamoru Kodai, Sanada carries guilt over failing to properly repair the Yukikaze before it departed for battle. When Susumu Kodai assumes the role of acting captain, Sanada frequently provides counsel, eventually becoming the crew’s primary spokesperson following the deaths of Okita and Engineer Tokugawa. His surname is derived from the historical daimyo Sanada Masayuki. In the 2199 continuity, he serves as the Executive Officer under Captain Juuzou Okita. This version of the character omits any reference to bionic limbs and shifts his sense of guilt away from the Yukikaze repairs; instead, he blames himself for not informing Mamoru Kodai that Operation M was a suicide mission designed to distract the Gamilas.
