Kondou, Isao

Summary

Kondou Isao, a 28-year-old commander of the Shinsengumi, stands 184 cm tall with dark brown hair, brown eyes, and an A blood type. Born on September 4 under the Virgo sign, he is the son of Matsudaira Katakuriko, a high-ranking government official directly controlled by the Bakufu. Despite his loyalty to Kondou, the Shinsengumi members often require intervention from Vice-Commander Hijikata Toushirou to settle down, whether through harsh words or violence, before Kondou can address them. Kondou shares a deep bond with Hijikata and Okita Sougo, once telling Sougo that if one of them strayed, the other two would punch them back into line. Sougo notes that Kondou’s nice-guy attitude is also his weakness, as he fails to notice the negative traits in others. During the Mutiny arc, Itou Kamotarou described Kondou as honest, pure, and unsullied, while Hijikata referred to him as the soul of the Shinsengumi, with the rest of the group serving as the sword that protects him. Hijikata emphasized that everyone joined the organization to be with Kondou, asserting that as long as Kondou remained, the Shinsengumi would not fall. Kondou’s history traces back to his childhood in a dojo in Bushuu, where he recruited both Okita and Hijikata. He later moved all members to Edo to seek success, effectively forming the Shinsengumi. In his personal life, Kondou is known for stalking Shimura Tae, earning him the nickname Gorilla-stalker. This pursuit began after Kondou asked Tae if she would still love her boyfriend if he had a hairy butt, and she replied that she would love him regardless. Consequently, Kondou is frequently beaten or threatened by Tae, who strongly disapproves of his affection. Additionally, many characters call him "gorilla" due to his hirsute nature; although he is angered by the nickname, he occasionally uses it to refer to himself. During the Yagyuu arc, Kondou expressed a desire to become Shimura Shinpachi’s brother-in-law, claiming Shinpachi was the only one he could entrust the Shinsengumi to, a sentiment Shinpachi dismissed by stating he did not care about the organization. Kondou is loosely based on the historical Kondou Isami, renowned for his role as the Shinsengumi commander during the Bakumatsu period.
