Ayasegawa, Yumichika

Summary

Yumichika Ayasegawa is a narcissistic warrior and close friend of Ikkaku Madarame. The two grew up together in the Rukongai, seeking out battles until Ikkaku was defeated by Kenpachi Zaraki. Inspired by Zaraki’s philosophy that one should live to kill the person who failed to kill them, and motivated by news of Zaraki’s promotion to captain, they both joined the 11th Division. Yumichika aimed for the 3rd Seat because he considers the kanji for three the most beautiful, but when Ikkaku claimed it, Yumichika settled for the 5th Seat, reasoning that the number five resembles a three. The reason Ikkaku retains his rank remains ambiguous, whether due to superior strength or Yumichika’s generosity. Visually, Yumichika features colorful feathers on his eyelashes and eyebrows, along with shiny skin and hair, giving him a somewhat feminine appearance in the early manga. He judges all people and objects based on beauty and is highly vain, yet he occasionally displays a caring and helpful side. His zanpakutō, Fuji Kujaku, has a shikai release command of "bloom." It manifests as a sickle-shaped blade with the cutting edge on the interior, equipped with a hinge that allows it to split into four identical blades. Although Yumichika hides the truth from his 11th Division comrades to avoid their disdain for non-direct attack swords, Fuji Kujaku functions as a kidō-type weapon. By invoking the command "tearing deviate," the blade transforms into a burst of peacock feathers that drains the opponent’s spiritual power, enabling Yumichika to defeat lieutenant-level opponents with ease. Yumichika is also attempting to awaken his bankai, but the process is hindered by Fuji Kujaku’s own narcissistic personality, leading Yumichika to comically yell at his sword while trying to break it against a boulder.
