Rock serves as a recurring figure within Osamu Tezuka’s manga universe and functions as a central component of the Tezuka Star System. Initially introduced as a youthful detective in the series Detective Boy Rock Holmes, he possesses shiny dark hair. Unlike many other child characters in Tezuka’s works who remain static in age, Rock ages over time, allowing his character to be repurposed for more mature roles. This evolution is accompanied by a gradual shift toward a darker personality, often portraying him as a cold, brutal antagonist, such as the kidnapper and murderer seen in Phoenix. In his adult form, he is typically depicted in a three-piece suit, striped tie, and dark sunglasses, with the eyewear becoming a signature element. While he is frequently cast as a villain, he is equally capable of heroic actions, yet always retains a determined, absolute, and charismatic demeanor. American audiences are most familiar with him through his dark, violent portrayals in the Metropolis film and the second volume of Alabaster.
