Black Jack is an unlicensed doctor with a shadowy past who specializes in treating rare and dangerous medical conditions. Alongside his young assistant Pinoko, who deeply admires him, he tackles unusual and difficult cases. As a highly skilled surgeon, he can save nearly anyone if they can afford his exorbitant fees. His reputation spans the globe, especially among medical and scientific circles. Despite his dedication to empirical evidence and initial doubts, he often finds himself in situations where love and natural phenomena surpass the scientific principles he values.

Background
Black Jack won the first Kodansha Manga Award for the Shounen category in 1977. The series was first published in English by VIZ Media, who released select chapters in their manga anthology magazine Manga Vizion, and later released those chapters in two volumes in 1999. Vertical Inc. published the entire series in English from September 23, 2008, to November 29, 2011.
