Summary

Yamazaki Sagaru is a thirty-two-year-old spy born on February 6 who possesses a natural talent for gathering intelligence. Standing 169 cm tall and weighing 58 kg, he is frequently caught playing badminton alone by Hijikata, which invariably results in him being beaten. In a quirky habit, he often cosplays as a badminton-playing version of Echizen Ryoma from The Prince of Tennis, even adopting Ryoma’s catchphrase, "Mada mada dane," as seen in episode 62. Although his role as a ninja is loosely based on the historical Yamazaki Susumu, he rarely utilizes these skills, aside from one failed attempt to spy on Gintoki. Despite his rivalry with Shinpachi, the two often find themselves in agreement regarding their respective groups. Despite having limited screen time, Yamazaki ranked ninth in the Gintama character popularity poll. However, author Sorachi has explicitly stated that Yamazaki will never appear on a volume cover.
