Summary

Sakata Gintoki is a samurai navigating a world where his traditional role has become obsolete, a situation complicated by the arrival of oppressive aliens known as Amanto who have invaded Earth. He supports himself by accepting odd jobs through his business, the Yorozuya, alongside two companions: Kagura and Shinpachi. During the Joui war, Gintoki earned the terrifying moniker "White Devil" or Shiroyasha because of his silver hair and white battle attire, which, combined with his formidable swordsmanship, made him a legendary figure among his comrades and a source of dread for the Amanto. Physically, Gintoki possesses naturally permed silver hair, a trait he humorously attributes to his poor romantic luck. He harbors a secret crush on Ketsuno, a TV news weather girl, and has been seen blushing only in rare instances, such as when attempting to use Sadaharu and Ketsuno’s dog as an excuse to speak with her, or later when Tsukuyo discovers him shopping. Although several female characters have shown interest in him, he typically ignores these advances, treating them as mere annoyances rather than reciprocating their feelings. Gintoki is driven by two primary obsessions: an intense love for sweets, including parfaits, ice cream, and cakes, and a devotion to reading Weekly Shounen Jump, the very magazine in which Gintama is serialized. He will go to reckless lengths to acquire the latest issue, even dreaming of possessing a "Bankai" ability akin to characters in Bleach. Despite his lazy exterior and initial behavior, he holds deep respect for the old bushido code. He frequently risks his life to rescue or avenge not only his friends and comrades but also strangers, such as a pit-fighter caring for orphans or an Amanto resembling a kappa. This protective nature stems from his experiences in the Joui war, where he lost most of his allies. Though he is a fearsome fighter with nearly unmatched skills, he now avoids unnecessary bloodshed to honor those he lost. His favorite quote, "Then and now, what I protect has never changed," encapsulates his enduring commitment to his principles.
