Kodai, Susumu

Summary

Born on July 7, Kodai is a young orphan whose life was irrevocably altered when a Gamilus planet bomb attack on the Miura Peninsula claimed the lives of his parents. This tragedy motivated him to follow in the footsteps of his older brother, Mamoru, by joining the Earth Defence Force. Initially characterized by a hot-headed temperament and a tendency toward bursts of anger, Kodai harbored deep resentment toward Captain Okita, blaming him for his brother’s death in battle. However, his perspective shifted as he matured throughout the first season, taking on the significant responsibility of serving as the Yamato’s battle chief. His dedication eventually led Okita to nominate him as acting captain when he could no longer continue his duties. Although Kodai was never formally promoted to the rank of captain, he commanded the Yamato and its crew for the majority of the franchise, only handing over control on two occasions: to Yamanami in Be Forever Yamato and to a revived Okita during Final Yamato. Beyond his leadership role, he is a skilled pilot who flies his own Cosmo Zero fighter as the leader of the Black Tigers, frequently joining the Cosmo Tigers in combat during the second season. His given name translates to "to go forward, to improve."
