Summary

Born on August 8, 2181, Daisuke Shima serves as a quieter and more level-headed counterbalance to his best friend Susumu Kodai. He assumes the roles of chief navigator and helmsman aboard the Yamato. Although he possesses the skill to save the ship on numerous occasions, he struggles with a lack of self-confidence regarding his ability to control the mighty vessel. Shima and Kodai engage in frequent arguments during the first series, some of which escalate into physical brawls, yet these conflicts ultimately strengthen their friendship. In the second season, Shima falls in love with Teresa of Telezart through interstellar radio. He is heartbroken when she chooses to remain on her world rather than face the Comet Empire, but he vows to carry on the fight in her name.
