Summary

Okita Sougo is the First Division Captain of the Shinsengumi and widely regarded as the group's finest swordsman. At 18 years old, he stands 170 cm tall and weighs 58 kg. While his personality often leans toward being light-hearted and somewhat childish, he delivers his dialogue with a heavily deadpan tone. He outwardly displays annoyance and dislike for Hijikata, constantly seeking opportunities to harm or humiliate him. Despite this animosity, Okita still considers Hijikata one of his three closest friends, alongside Kondo and Gintoki. He holds a deep affection and fondness for Kondo, who took him under his wing during his childhood. Okita has a peculiar enjoyment of watching women fight, finding their angry expressions hilarious. During duty, he frequently naps while wearing a distinctive eye mask. Although he is a master of kenjutsu, he prefers using a bazooka and once even referred to himself as the best sniper in the Shinsengumi. He views Kagura as a rival following an unfinished rock-paper-scissors duel at a sakura-blossom party, declaring that he will be the only one to defeat her and usually addressing her as "China." In the original Japanese manga, he characteristically ends his sentences with "~desaa" and "~desuzee." Originally designed by Sorachi as a female character wielding an umbrella, this concept was ultimately reassigned to Kagura. In the second Shounen JUMP character popularity poll, Okita secured second place, ranking just below Gintoki. His name is based on the historical figure Okita Souji. Although he is under Japan's legal drinking age, the laws in Edo permitted alcohol consumption at age 15.
