Summary

Takasugi, Shinsuke is a 27-year-old former comrade of Gintoki and Katsura who serves as a major antagonist and the leader of the radical Joui faction known as the Kiheitai. Born on August 10 under the Leo zodiac sign, he stands 170 cm tall and weighs 60 kg. He is easily recognizable by his black hair with purple highlights, light olive green eyes, and a bandage covering his left eye. His attire typically consists of a colorful kimono, and he is often seen smoking a pipe or playing the shamisen. During his childhood, Takasugi attended the same temple elementary school as Gintoki and Katsura. He fought alongside them against the Amanto invasion during the latter stages of the Joui war. Following the conflict, he vanished and earned a fearsome reputation for assassinating numerous Bakufu officers and orchestrating a large-scale coup d'etat. Before his debut in the series, rumors circulated that he had fled Edo to hide in Kyoto. He now operates under the belief that the only way to save Japan is to destroy the "rotten" post-Joui war world. Takasugi is described by the Shinsengumi as the most dangerous man in both the Joui faction and among the radicals. He possesses a nihilistic attraction to ruin, which drives his enjoyment of festivals as opportunities for large-scale terrorist attacks. Despite his violent methods, he demonstrates considerable insight, such as when he "saw through Itou's heart" and successfully planted him within the Shinsengumi. As one of the "heroes" of the Joui war, he is assumed to be as skilled a swordsman as Gintoki and Katsura. He also displays notable proficiency with the shamisen, having been seen playing it with Bansai. His character is based on the historical figure Takasugi Shinsaku.
