von Reuenthal, Oskar

Summary

Born on October 26, 458 R.C. (767 U.C.), Oskar von Reuenthal serves as a rear admiral in Reinhard’s fleet, standing alongside Wolfgang Mittermeyer as Reinhard’s most capable field commander. His origins are marked by tragedy; he was the son of a wealthy but lowborn noble and a mother from a prestigious yet impoverished lineage who married solely for money. Reuenthal was born with heterochromia, possessing one blue eye and one brown eye. Since both parents had blue eyes, this trait was falsely viewed as evidence of his mother’s infidelity. The resulting scandal led his mother to attempt to gouge out his brown eye while he was an infant before committing suicide. His father blamed the child, leading to a childhood defined by neglect and hatred. Reuenthal entered the military and advanced rapidly through the ranks, finding in warfare the purpose that kept him alive. While stationed at fortress Iserlohn, he formed a deep friendship with Wolfgang Mittermeyer, who remains the only person with whom Reuenthal maintains a normal relationship. When Mittermeyer was unjustly detained and faced assassination by the nobility, Reuenthal pledged his loyalty to Reinhard in exchange for assistance in saving his friend. Externally, Reuenthal appears calm and composed, serving as a brilliant strategist second only to Reinhard. However, he is internally unstable, described as a ticking bomb kept in check only by Mittermeyer’s soothing influence. His troubled past has left him with profound self-loathing and an inability to trust women, preventing him from forming healthy romantic relationships despite his charm and success with the opposite sex. Although proud and ambitious, often contemplating betrayal, his respect for Reinhard and the debt he feels he owes him restrain his treacherous impulses. He commands the flagship Tristan.
