Summary

Rukia Kuchiki is a Shinigami assigned to the 13rd Division, born on January 14 with the physical stature of 144 cm and weighing 33 kg. She possesses black hair and violet eyes, wielding the Zanpakutou Sode no Shirayuki, which is activated by the command Mae. Her background is marked by tragedy; after dying in the human world, she and her older sister Hisana were transported to the 78th District of Rukongai. Unable to care for both children, Hisana abandoned infant Rukia. Rukia survived by forming a makeshift family with Renji Abarai and other local children, stealing food to stay alive while displaying a tough, tomboyish demeanor. Both she and Renji manifested spiritual power early on, but after their friends perished, Rukia proposed joining the Shinigami Academy to secure a better future. At the Academy, Renji advanced to the top class while Rukia remained in the second tier, causing their paths to diverge emotionally. Their separation deepened when Rukia was invited to join the prestigious Kuchiki family. Although Renji expressed happiness for her, both secretly mourned the likelihood of never seeing each other again. Rukia reluctantly accepted, bypassing graduation and entrance exams to join the 13th Division directly. Unbeknownst to her, Byakuya Kuchiki had adopted her to honor the final wish of Hisana, whom Byakuya had married. Within the Division, Byakuya shielded her from dangerous missions, leaving her under the mentorship of Lieutenant Kaien Shiba. Their training began at Mount Koifushi in the 3rd District of West Rukongai. Rukia held great admiration for Kaien’s wife, 3rd Seat Miyako Shiba, until Miyako was slain by a hollow. Rukia, Kaien, and Captain Jūshirō Ukitake pursued the creature. During the confrontation, the hollow’s unique ability shattered Kaien’s Zanpakutō. When Rukia moved to intervene, Ukitake stopped her, explaining that Kaien was fighting for honor rather than survival; aiding him would ruin his dignity. The hollow subsequently possessed Kaien. While Ukitake engaged the entity, his chronic illness allowed the hollow to strike Rukia. Kaien briefly regained control and impaled himself with Rukia’s sword to end the threat, thanking them before dying in her arms. Rukia returned the body to the Shiba family, burdened by guilt and too afraid to apologize for her part in the tragedy.
