Summary

Born on October 31, Tae Shimura is the elder sister of Shinpachi. At eighteen years old, and twenty following the Silver Soul arc, she stands 168 cm tall and weighs 49 kg. Alongside her brother, she manages the Kakidokan Dojo, a failing establishment previously run by their father. While typically referred to as Otae, with the O serving as an honorific for women, Kagura consistently addresses her as Big sister (ane-go). Despite her gentle appearance, she is among the most violent characters in Gintama, possessing considerable strength as well. She ruthlessly beats Kondo Isao and Gintoki whenever they provoke her. In one instance, she violently kicks her brother, Gintoki, and Hasegawa onto the street to stop a car for a ride. She often flashes a sweet, closed-eyed smile before unleashing her aggression. Her killer intent is so potent that a single glare once forced the entire Shinsengumi to their knees in supplication. Her preferred weapon is a Japanese spear known as a naginata. Her culinary abilities are disastrous. Her tamagoyaki is so inedible that Kondo suffered amnesia after consuming it, while others struggle to swallow it. Yamazaki labeled it poison after it accidentally splashed into his eye. When Kagura attempted to hypnotize herself into eating Otae’s cooking, Shinpachi objected, claiming that Otae’s meals were the cause of his poor eyesight. Tae holds strong principles, prioritizing the preservation of what is precious over honor or dignity. She has stated that if apologies were sufficient, seppuku would be unnecessary. Her favorite food is Häagen-Dazs ice-cream, though it is referred to as Bargain Dash in the manga and anime adaptations.
