SDCC 2026: Anime Scaled Back on Stage, Still Owned the Floor

San Diego Comic-Con 2026 closed with a familiar contradiction: anime is hotter than ever in U.S. theaters and living rooms, yet the industry’s big-stage presence on the convention floor looked thinner than last year. Crunchyroll noticeably pulled back from the sprawling activations fans remember—including the free outdoor Anime FanFest that once filled Rady Shell—while some manga publishers openly said they were saving major reveals for next month’s Anime NYC.
That did not mean anime vanished. Crowds packed a My Hero Academia 10th-anniversary panel with English cast favorites, an Aniplex industry session, Bandai’s highly anticipated GUNDAM Showcase, and the vampire-flavored Dark Moon panel that drew ENHYPEN fans into the mix. On the show floor, cosplayers in Demon Slayer, The Apothecary Diaries, Witch Hat Atelier, and One Piece gear kept the culture loud and visible beside American superhero booths.
Merchandise and photo ops did the heavy lifting where Hall H slots did not. Dan Da Dan’s Turbo Granny drew Momo and Okarun fans; Toei offered Luffy cutouts; TAMASHII NATIONS rolled out a life-size Yuji Itadori; Kodansha staged a live mural demo with Gachiakuta graffiti designer Hideyoshi Andou. Dark Moon freebies and paid merch reportedly sold out before Saturday night—proof that when anime shows up, Comic-Con still shows up for it.
The quiet takeaway after a record-setting theatrical year for anime: a lot of the industry’s energy went into Anime Expo weeks earlier. SDCC 2026 still proved the demand is there—cosplayers, collectors, and K-pop–anime crossovers filled every gap the big panels left open. Whether studios put more weight back into broad pop-culture halls next summer may decide if Comic-Con remains a must-stop or becomes a pass-through on the way to dedicated anime cons.
