The main characters from the .hack//G.U. games and .hack//Roots get an email from Ovan inviting them to the Hidden Forbidden Festival, a mysterious summer event that has suddenly popped up. When they attend the festival, they meet an AIDA Chim Chim that wishes to live peacefully alongside other players of The World. The Chim Chim then turns into the word "Returner," strengthening their belief that Ovan intends to come back to The World.

The narrative of Mushi-uta unfolds in the not-so-distant future. A decade prior to the events, mysterious insect-like beings dubbed "Mushi" started to emerge. These Mushi have the ability to devour people's dreams and thoughts in exchange for granting them supernatural abilities. By the conclusion of the first episode, the main character, Daisuke "Kakkou" Kusuriya, meets a young girl named Shiika Anmoto. Over time, the two grow very close. Yet, Kakkou is unaware that Shiika is a fugitive from a clandestine facility called GARDEN, where individuals infected by the Mushi—known as Mushitsuki—are confined. The military division of GARDEN, the Special Environmental Conservation Executive Office, dispatches their most skilled assassin to capture Shiika. However, they encounter opposition from the Mushibane resistance group, led by the mysterious figure known as "Ladybird."

Set before the events of the main journey, this prequel examines the origins of the Saiyuuki quartet. The first OVA focuses on Sanzo and his master, as well as Ukoku, later known as Ni Jianyi. With Dorami's Moshimo-box, they succeed in restoring the Earth. Yet the events unfolding in the Underworld continue to occur within a Parallel Universe, where Miyoko remains a prisoner. As a result, the group is compelled once more to travel to the Underworld and put an end to its oppressive ruler for good.

The storyline diverges from the television series in several key ways, most notably the early death of Sirius, a different upbringing for Apollo, and a stronger emphasis on the events from twelve thousand years ago—especially the death of Apollonius and the role played by Reika's prior incarnation.

The classic tale of Gegege no Kitaro returns for another adaptation. This iteration follows the established format of the Gegege no Kitaro franchise. Kitaro, a young boy, makes his home in the Gegege Forest/Cemetery, an area filled with many Yokai. He shares his dwelling with his nearly dead father, who lives only as an eyeball, along with Sunakake Babaa, NekoMusume, and Konaki Jiji. A distinct difference in this version is that Kitaro's hair is brown instead of the usual grayish silver.

On his way back, he manages to follow the same route, but the next day the path is nowhere to be found. As years go by, his recollections of the girl slowly vanish. Many decades later, now an old man, he returns to the city and sees the girl again in his dreams. Even after all those years, he still keeps the feather with him, unwavering.
