Summary

Gengar is a dark purple, bipedal Pokémon characterized by a roundish body, red eyes, and a wide mouth perpetually curled into a sinister grin. It features pointed ears, a stubby tail, and short limbs with three digits on each hand and foot. Its back is adorned with numerous spikes, while smaller, tuft-like spikes sit atop its head. This Pokémon possesses the ability to blend perfectly into shadows, granting it exceptional stealth. Its body acts as a heat sink, absorbing warmth and lowering the surrounding temperature by nearly 10 °F (5 °C). In Pokémon the Series, Gengar demonstrates capabilities such as flight, intangibility, possession of humans and other Pokémon, illusion creation, dimensional travel, and extending its tongue several meters. In media like POKÉMON Detective Pikachu and the Pokémon Ranger series, it can also create copies of itself. Mischievous and occasionally malicious, Gengar enjoys practical jokes and curses, such as mimicking a person’s shadow during a full moon to behave erratically or attacking those lost in mountains. It delights in its victims' terror when they notice its presence, though it can be loyal to Trainers who treat it well. Gengar typically waits in shadows or dark areas of homes to steal life force, a behavior stemming from its past as a human seeking a traveling companion. As the result of Evolution via trading, Gengar is rarely found in the wild, preferring caves and shadowed locations. According to Pokémon Sleep, it sleeps deeply while hiding in the shadow of a target it intends to curse. Gengar has two distinct forms: Mega Gengar and Gigantamax Gengar. As Mega Gengar, part of its body sinks into the ground while its arms and tail lengthen. The lower body turns a reddish-purple hue, and a third, unblinking yellow eye appears on its forehead, allowing it to see into other dimensions. Its back spikes become more numerous and pointed, with additional spikes appearing on its hands and tail, and its ears grow considerably longer and tilt backward. Mega Gengar has a vicious nature, warping its relationships due to Mega Evolution. It views opponents only as prey and desires to curse the life of anyone or anything in its path, potentially even cursing its own Trainer. It sinks into another dimension to wait for an attack opportunity, allowing it to appear anywhere at will. Notably, it once caused an incident where one of its legs protruded from a wall. As Gigantamax Gengar, it grows larger, with only its head, tail, and arms remaining visible as the rest sinks into the ground. Its color shifts from dark purple to light purple, and its eyes turn white with yellow sclera. Its mouth transforms into a tunnel-like structure with a long purple tongue protruding from it, surrounded by three red clouds at the top of its head. Rumors suggest its mouth does not lead to its body but to the afterlife due to its cursed energy. It uses traps to steal the lives of captured individuals; those standing near its mouth may hear the voices of their loved ones calling out to them. Gengar evolves from Haunter and is the final form of Gastly.
