Shueisha Brings Horikoshi Back: Horror One-Shot Hits Jump Aug. 10

Shueisha just handed Weekly Shonen Jump fans the kind of curveball only a flagship creator can throw. Kōhei Horikoshi—the artist who spent a decade building My Hero Academia into a 100-million-copy phenomenon—is back in the magazine with an entirely new one-shot, and it has nothing to do with Quirks or hero licenses.

Titled Don’t Laugh, Shijima-san (Warawanaide yo, Shijima-san), the 61-page story is pitched as a “boy-meets-girl horror” piece and will run in the combined Issues 37/38 of Weekly Shonen Jump, on sale in Japan on August 10. Preview art already teases a pair of protagonists wrapped in a far colder atmosphere than the bright halls of U.A., signaling that Horikoshi is finally chasing the horror itch he once admitted in a Jump author comment years ago.

This is his first original Jump work since My Hero Academia closed its ten-year run in August 2024. The magazine is treating the return as a centerpiece moment—color pages included—while the same double issue also marks the 50th anniversary of KochiKame with special features. For readers who stuck with Midoriya’s long climb to the top, Shueisha’s announcement is a clear reminder: Horikoshi’s next chapter starts in the dark.
