Asuka Masamune has a deep fondness for things that are cute, fluffy, sparkly, and sweet—a side of himself his mother deplores. After his father left the family due to a certain incident, Asuka was pushed to abandon those hobbies and instead pour himself into kendo, judo, and karate. Resigned to living as the picture of masculinity, he becomes the nationally ranked captain of his school's kendo team. However, his old interests resurface when he meets and falls for transfer student Ryo Miyakozuka. Ryo is Asuka's complete opposite. She has no interest in cooking, sewing, or anything considered "girly"; instead, she possesses a fierce kick and an equally tough personality. Seeing this as a perfect chance to gather material for a shoujo manga he's secretly publishing, Asuka's friend Juta Tachibana persuades him to befriend her. As the bond between Asuka and Ryo blossoms, so too does his true nature as an "otomen." Included one-shots: Volume 10: Glass no Otomen: Sen no Kamen wo Motsu Otomen Volume 11: Love-Tic

Background

Otomen was published in English by VIZ Media under the Shojo Beat imprint from February 3, 2009 to May 6, 2014. The series has also been published in Chinese by Tong Li Publishing Co. Ltd.; in French by Delcourt; in German by Carlsen Verlag; in Italian by Goen and Planeta DeAgostini Comics; and in Portuguese by Planet Manga. The manga was adapted into a Japanese television drama that spanned 12 episodes and aired on Fuji TV between August 1 and October 27 in 2009.
