During an outing with his childhood friend Ran Mouri, Shinichi stumbles upon a covert exchange between two individuals and becomes entangled in their scheme. Targeted for elimination with a lethal poison, Shinichi instead shrinks to the size of a young elementary student. Believed to have died, he adopts the alias Conan Edogawa, combining the names of mystery authors Arthur Conan Doyle and Ranpo Edogawa, to conceal his true identity. Living under this new guise as a seven-year-old with Ran and her father, a private detective, Conan continues to unravel murder mysteries while working to expose the criminals responsible for his transformation and find a way to restore his original form.

Meitantei Conan was awarded the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shounen category in 2000. It has sold over 270 million copies as of January 2023, making it the third best-selling manga series of all time. The series has been published in English as Case Closed by VIZ Media under the Shonen Sunday imprint since September 7, 2004. The series has been simulpub in English through VIZ Manga since May 9, 2023. It is also published by Shogakukan Asian as Detective Conan, keeping the original Japanese names. Shogakukan Asian has also been publishing Detective Conan Kaito Kid Special Collection, a compilation of cases that feature the character Kaito Kuroba, since July 2017.
