The story of "Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu" follows a protagonist who is one of the poorest performing students in his school. In this institution, pupils can transform their exam results into summoned monsters that fight one another with teachers overseeing. But any student who gives up on a test gets a mark of zero. Mizuki Himeji, a clever and cute girl, became sick while taking her exam and was forced to depart, earning a zero even though she could have placed second in her entire grade. As a result, she is placed in Class F, the bottom-ranked class. In this school, academic performance dictates almost every facet of daily life. Students in Class A enjoy a stylish teacher, a floor-to-wall plasma television replacing the board, separate laptops, private air conditioning units, fridges, chairs that can be adjusted, plus many other luxuries. Their refrigerator holds drinks and snacks, the ceiling is transparent glass, and the walls can support tasteful decorations and plants. On the opposite end, Class F—the very worst class—gets only simple Japanese-style desks and seat cushions. Their blackboard is filthy and has no chalk available. Pupils gripe about broken furniture, and the teacher advises using glue for repairs. A broken window allows cold air in, and the teacher plans to cover it with plastic bags and tape. Cobwebs cover the room, the walls are dirty, and a strong musty smell permeates the air, probably from the aged tatami mats. This is the grim situation facing Class F. Resolved to better their circumstances, the protagonist and his comrades come up with plans to take on Class A using summoned monster fights, aiming to win Class A's excellent classroom and privileges should they succeed.
