Taira Capeta is a fourth-grade boy who lost his mother at a young age. He puts on a brave face for his father but struggles with feelings of loneliness. One day, his father brings home scrap parts from work and builds a racing cart for them to use. They decide to test it at a nearby track. Although they discover the cart's frame is warped, making it hard to steer straight, Capeta uses his driving skills to control it effectively. He quickly catches up to and nearly overtakes a leading cart driven by Minamoto Naomoi, the reigning champion of the East Japan Junior Cart competition. Seeing this, Naomoi's mother, Minamoto Nanako, encourages Capeta to enter an official race.
