High school freshman Shindou Satoru follows the path of his missing sister Miyuki and joins the school's archery club, which at that point has only a single member—second-year student Kaname Yumiko. The moment Satoru picks up a bow for the first time, he is suddenly transported to a strange world where he is attacked by spirits armed with bows. To his shock, Yumiko appears to protect him, but she is ultimately defeated by the spirits. Just when Satoru is at the mercy of his enemies, a seemingly non-hostile spirit named Hannya—a Buddhist term for wisdom—intervenes and saves him. After returning to his own world, Satoru learns about the Kyudoshi's (Archer's) duty to fight these spirits. Yumiko further reveals that his sister Miyuki was also a Kyudoshi and went missing while battling a spirit that closely resembles Hannya. Accepting his fate, Satoru decides to take up the fight and search for his sister.
