Set in 1970s Paris, the story unfolds within the captivating yet tawdry world of a circus. This circus, more like a cirque, embodies both the allure and decay of the performance space. There are no traditional circus animals; instead, we find enigmatic jugglers, daredevil trapeze artists, and melancholic Pierrot clowns, including the protagonist, Torinosu, whose name means "Bird's Nest," and who wears a fake red nose. The circus owner exploits his performers for profit. The narrative is steeped in a decadent atmosphere: ethereal spirits resembling teenage girls, who are actually the hero's deceased brother; deranged women who enjoy inflicting suffering; a buracon relationship; hints of murder; unexpressed desires; and a hero perpetually teetering on the brink of despair.
