Asuka Masamune has always had a deep fondness for anything cute, fluffy, sparkly, or sweet, but his mother considers this shameful. After his father mysteriously left the family, Asuka was forced to abandon these interests and instead focus on martial arts like kendo, judo, and karate. He adapts to the role of a masculine ideal, eventually becoming captain of his school's kendo team, earning national recognition for his skill. His old passions resurface when he meets and falls for the new transfer student, Ryo Miyakozuka. Ryo is Asuka's complete opposite, showing no interest in traditionally feminine pursuits like cooking or sewing, and instead projecting toughness through both her attitude and her powerful kicking ability. Seeing this as a perfect chance to gather material for the shoujo manga he secretly publishes, Asuka's friend Juta Tachibana convinces him to befriend Ryo. Otomen was published in English by VIZ Media under the Shojo Beat imprint from February 3, 2009 to May 6, 2014. The series has also been published in Chinese by Tong Li Publishing Co. Ltd.; in French by Delcourt; in German by Carlsen Verlag; in Italian by Goen and Planeta DeAgostini Comics; and in Portuguese by Planet Manga. The manga was adapted into a Japanese television drama that spanned 12 episodes and aired on Fuji TV between August 1 and October 27 in 2009.
