At Soubu High School, Hachiman Hikigaya is a cynical loner whose past social struggles have left him with a grim view of life, seeing youth as a false illusion maintained by those refusing to face their own flaws. After he submits an essay criticizing this idea, his homeroom teacher Shizuka Hiratsuka takes notice and forces him to join the Volunteer Service Club. This club is intended to help students resolve their personal issues, with the hope that Hikigaya will undergo a positive change through assisting others. To his surprise, the club’s only other member is Yukino Yukinoshita, the most beautiful girl at Soubu High, who shares his distant personality but has a sharper mind. The club expands when Yui Yuigahama, another student, joins after they help her with her problem, and they start taking on more requests for help. Even after joining, Hikigaya holds onto his solitary habits and tries to solve problems with his unorthodox methods. However, these approaches may lead to unforeseen consequences.
