Kirari Aokigahara, an ordinary first-year high school student, decides to ditch class one day to attend a gathering at Seaside Cafe hosted by Rushio, the founder of a site called Suicide Cafe. Inside the cafe, surrounded by others who are also considering suicide, Kirari's bright and energetic demeanor stands out against the gloomy atmosphere. The group tries to kill themselves by swallowing sleeping pills and inhaling charcoal fumes inside a car, but instead of dying, they all have a strange dream about a girl committing suicide. When they wake up, the other participants seem renewed, leaving Kirari confused and annoyed that her attempt failed. Desperate to succeed, she tries different suicide methods at home, but none of them work. Rushio later explains to Kirari that she has been selected to prevent others, including the girl from the dream, from taking their own lives, and to become a magical girl known as a "Suicide Girl."
