Eiji Yariba is a 29-year-old sales team coach at an Arcadia car insurance call center in the Hachijou branch of Tokyo. He sees himself as nothing more than a corporate slave, yet he is known as the call center's ace and is looked up to by all his junior colleagues. On a weekend off, he runs into a high school girl at a manga cafe. The two connect over their shared love of books, especially because 15-year-old Karen Minamisato hopes to become a writer. Soon the underage girl develops a crush on Yariba, but he is forced to decline her feelings. Convinced that encounter was the last time he would see Karen, Yariba is taken aback when Takayashi Takamishi, the CEO of Arcadia's Japanese subsidiary, personally orders him to "court Karen Minamisato." As Karen's grandfather, Takamishi wants his granddaughter to be happy, and he has never seen her so lively as when she was with Yariba. Though the order is later softened after a horrified Karen learns of her grandfather's intervention, he still insists that Yariba become Karen's friend and watch over her. Eiji Yariba soon has to deal with major challenges in the sales department, in his personal relationships, and in his duty to maintain a non-romantic friendship with Karen while helping her develop as a writer.
