Office supply worker Ooba Kanako's mundane existence is turned upside down when she takes a job as a getaway driver for a couple robbing the Yakuza. As her final moments approach, she is bought at the last instant. Her buyer, the owner of a diner that serves killers and murderers, warns her that she is the ninth waitress to work at "Canteen"—her eight predecessors all met unfortunate ends at the hands of the moody customers. Will Kanako be the last waitress at "Canteen," or will she be fired from her second chance at life? Only time will tell.

Diner won the Japan Adventure Fiction Association Grand Prize in 2009 and the Haruhiko Oyabu Award in 2011. A live-action film based on the series was released in Japan on July 5, 2019.
