After losing her parents, Miyo Yamaguchi goes to live with a distant uncle and a demanding aunt, who pressure her to find work. Following several rejections, she gets a job as a sales clerk at a peculiar curio shop. Though she lacks standard qualifications, Miyo has a special gift that captivates the shop's owner, Momotoshi Koura—she can sense the history and future prospective owners of any object she touches. The store's assortment of rare items from far-off lands, combined with Momotoshi's quirky personality and the intimidating presence of his assistant, Ganjii, makes Miyo feel like she has stepped into Alice in Wonderland. Yet they prove to be caring allies, helping her adapt to her new position. Unknown to Miyo, her entrance into this strange world signals the start of an exciting new chapter and guides her toward a magical realm that will change her destiny forever.

Background

Nyx no Lantern is the second installment of Kan Takahama's loosely connected Nagasaki Trilogy, which also includes Chou no Michiyuki and Ougishima Saijiki. The series won the 21st Japan Media Arts Excellence Award in 2018 and the 24th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2020. It was published in French by Glénat from March 6, 2019, to January 20, 2021. In March 2019, French newspaper Le Figaro selected Nyx no Lantern as one of the six recommended manga featured at the 2019 Paris Book Fair. In September 2021, NHK Educational TV presented the series' production background during its The Age of Mind - Religion and Life program.
