Summary
Yaone serves as the alchemist for Kougaiji, the youkai prince featured in the anime and manga series Saiyuki. Originally the daughter of an alchemist, she was chosen as a sacrifice by the woman-eating Hyakuganmaoh until Kougaiji intervened to save her. In gratitude, she pledged her life to his service and also assumes the role of babysitter for Kougaiji’s sister, Lirin. Yaone primarily utilizes a short spear, explosives, and an array of poisons in combat. In the second volume of the manga, she targets the Sanzo Ikkou, first attempting to poison their food and then trying to gas them. Her principal adversary is Hakkai, whose calm and collected demeanor mirrors her own. She bears a striking resemblance to Kanan, Hakkai’s deceased lover, which leads to occasional instances where she and Hakkai fight side-by-side alongside the entire Sanzo Ikkou. Despite these temporary alliances, Yaone remains unequivocally devoted to Kougaiji.
