Summary
Kougaiji is a youkai prince residing in Houtou Castle with his parents, Gyumaoh and Ratsetsunyo. A powerful warrior with a strong will and a kind heart, he excels in martial arts and youjutsu, notably utilizing fire projectiles and the Engokuki, a summoning spell that creates a flame prison. In the series, he opposes Genjou Sanzou and Sanzo Ikkou, forced by his stepmother Gyokumen Koushou, whom he despises, to steal the five Sutras from them. His motivation is securing the maten sutra to earn Gyokumen Koushou’s promise to break the curse that turned his mother into stone. His devotion to Ratsetsunyo and benevolent nature inspire loyalty among his followers, including his beloved half-sister Lirin, his swordsman bodyguard and brother-like figure Dokugakuji, and Yaone, an alchemist he rescued from the woman-eating Hyakuganmaoh.
