Summary

Kyuubei serves as the sole heir to the Yagyuu family, standing as the daughter of Yagyuu Koshinori and the granddaughter of Yagyuu Binbokusai. Although female, she was raised as a male in accordance with samurai codes. A genius swordsman, her skills surpass those of average fighters, allowing her to hold her own against veteran warriors like Hijikata Toushirou and Sakata Gintoki. During her introduction, she attempted to claim Shimura Tae as her fiancee, an act thwarted by Shimura Shinpachi and others. Despite retaining feelings for Tae, their relationship remains friendly. She often follows Tae’s lead and protects her from the stalking efforts of Kondou Isao. She is constantly guarded by Toujou Ayumu, who is overly protective and attempts to dress her in gothic lolita outfits. These attempts irritate her, often resulting in her physically beating him up. In recent chapters, she became the target of jealousy from Katsura Kotarou, who felt she was receiving more attention in the manga spotlight than he was. Kyuubei possesses a cold personality, likely a result of her rigorous training to become strong. However, Tae’s influence is softening her nature as they spend more free time together. She has an automatic reflex to attack men who touch her or whom she touches, with the notable exception of once saving Gin by catching his hand. It was revealed in episode 190 that she genuinely enjoys Otae’s cooking. Her name likely references the famous samurai Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi, as "Ju" translates to ten and "Kyu" to nine.
