Dokugakuji
Summary
Dokugakuji is a fictional character from the Saiyuki manga and anime series, serving as the loyal bodyguard to the youkai prince Kougaiji. He appears prominently in the Saiyuki Reload and Reload Gunlock adaptations. He is the older half-brother of Sha Gojyo, whom Gojyo has spent years searching for. In the original manga, their paths first cross in the third volume. While Gojyo is the son of their father’s human mistress, Dokugakuji is a full youkai, born to their father’s legal wife. Before his defection, he went by the name Sha Jien. He often placated his mother’s violent rage toward Gojyo by sleeping with her, effectively replacing his deceased father. When his mother eventually attempted to kill Gojyo, Sha Jien killed her to protect his brother. Approximately six years before the start of the manga, Dokugakuji arrived at Houtou Castle, where the trusting Prince Kougaiji hired him without hesitation. Dokugakuji pledged his absolute loyalty to the prince, stating, "I decided I owed you my all." He fights for Kougaiji, who is the son of the Ox-Demon Gyumaoh, as the Sanzou Ikkou work to prevent the demon lord’s revival. Dokugakuji wields a sword that he summons in the same manner that Goku calls forth his nyoi-bo or Gojyo retrieves his shakujou. The two brothers frequently clash in battle whenever their respective groups encounter one another.
