Summary
Ganju Shiba is a boisterous character known for his vest, scarf, bandana, and goggles, often seen riding large boars with his gang. His personal mount is named Bonnie, or Bonnie-chan, though omake sketches after episode 114 jokingly suggest she was accidentally turned into stew by Retsu Unohana during a cookout with the 4th Division. Like other such gags, Bonnie reappears unharmed in subsequent episodes. Ganju harbors a deep-seated hatred for shinigami, a hot temper, and a strong ego. While he projects toughness, he is easily intimidated by his older sister, Kūkaku, and eventually forms a bond with Ichigo Kurosaki comparable to that of Ichigo and Renji Abarai. The series frequently mocks his lack of attractiveness, leading him to deflect comments, particularly when Yumichika Ayasegawa points it out. His animosity toward shinigami stems from his youth, when his brother, Kaien Shiba, was killed by Rukia Kuchiki. This grudge persists even after he learns the truth of the incident. It is implied that the Shiba clan, once a Noble Clan alongside the Kuchiki and Shihouin, lost its status after Kaien and his wife, Miyako, died, leaving only four Noble Clans. Upon his introduction, Ganju and Kūkaku are the clan's last survivors. Although not a shinigami, Ganju possesses combat abilities surpassing the average shinigami but falling short of high-ranking seated officers. He wields a zanpakutō resembling a meat cleaver or Chinese Dadao but never demonstrates its initial release. Instead, he relies on fireworks, agility, and earth magic, which functions differently from standard shinigami kidō. His signature technique, Stone Wave, requires no incantation and can turn targets into sand or quicksand, even when cast with his feet. This ability allowed him to escape Yumichika by digging through walls.
