Kido, Saori

Summary

Saori Kido is the mortal identity assumed by Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and heroic endeavor, during her twentieth-century incarnation. As a central figure in the Saint Seiya manga by Masami Kurumada and its anime adaptation, she serves as the divine leader of the Saints. Born in Greece on September first, she embodies the deity of battle, though she rejects conquest and offensive weaponry, preferring defensive warfare. Consequently, she forbids her followers from using weapons, with the sole exception of the Libra Gold Saint, who may wield arms only with her explicit permission. Athena is the daughter of Zeus and is dispatched to Earth by the Olympian gods every 250 years to restore peace and destroy evil forces. Her mission has historically been supported by an army of eighty-eight courageous youths known as the Saints of Athena, who wear radiant holy armor called Cloths. Due to her opposition to the ambitions of other deities, particularly her long-standing conflict with Hades, the god of the Underworld, she has faced rejection from the Olympian pantheon. In the English-language adaptations of the manga and edited anime, she is alternatively referred to as Princess Sienna.
