Summary

Moltres is a massive bird Pokémon characterized by light yellow feathers and a body enveloped in fire. Its long, flowing head crest, billowing tail, and wings are composed of reddish flames. The creature possesses a slender neck, a pointed brown beak, small triangular eyes, and thin brown legs ending in anisodactyl feet with three toes facing forward and one backward. With each wingbeat, it sheds embers that create dazzling flashes of flame, a phenomenon believed to have inspired the legend of the phoenix in An Illustrated Book of POCKET MONSTERS. In The Power of One (M02), its fire is said to have merged with ice to form the ocean's cradle, and it maintains ties to the weather patterns of the Orange Islands. Moltres can heal by immersing itself in the magma of active volcanoes. Rarely encountered, it migrates from the south with spring, bringing early warmth to cold regions. Legends recount Moltres using its wings to guide lost travelers in the mountains. In Pokémon Horizons, it appears in Laqua, the Pokémon paradise reserved for Legendary Pokémon. It has a fondness for Moltres Treats crafted by Snacksworth, who encountered it in the past. Moltres also possesses a regional variant known as Galarian Moltres. Found in Galar, it shares a similar silhouette but features a starkly different color palette. Its body is predominantly black with scarlet accents and bright blue eyes. The hooked scarlet beak connects to markings that extend down its front and behind its head. Its feet are scarlet with black talons, while its wings, crest, and tail are mostly black. The crest has an additional front curl, and the tail is split into two, all emitting magenta flame-like energy that justifies its name. The creature’s body feels lukewarm to the touch. The sinister energy radiating from within is so oppressive that most Pokémon avoid it. Galarian Moltres fights by spreading its wings to unleash a powerful aura that attacks the minds of foes, burning away their energy from within and causing deep fatigue. This aura can consume a victim's spirit, leaving them as drained shadows. As shown in Charge! Galar Mine! (HZ022), overcoming this aura requires a strong spirit. Described as haughty yet calm, it migrates globally but gathers with other birds at the Dyna Tree in the Crown Tundra every few decades to feast on its fruits.
