Summary

Koyomi Araragi is an eighteen-year-old third-year high school student, aging to nineteen from the Off and Monster Seasons onward. Standing at 165 cm and weighing 55 kg, he barely survived a vampire attack during spring break, retaining residual vampiric traits such as enhanced night vision, accelerated healing, and eyes that turn red when angry. Despite these changes, he remains psychologically scarred by morning sunlight, which no longer physically harms him, leading to existential questions about his lifespan. Socially, Koyomi is laid-back and struggles academically, nearly failing every subject except math. His only close friend at school is Tsubasa Hanekawa, while he maintains a loyal relationship with Hitagi, turning down romantic advances from other girls due to his devotion to her. Although other characters like Hitagi and Mayoi speculate that he is a lolicon—particularly regarding Nadeko Sengoku, whom Hitagi views as a threat—Koyomi’s true nature is more complex. He is deeply noble and self-sacrificing, often helping others at the risk of his own life, which draws strong attachments from the female characters around him. He finds it easiest to discuss his problems with Mayoi, Shinobu, and later Yotsugi. His family dynamic is misunderstood; while he believes his relationship with his parents is poor, his sisters Karen and Tsukihi disagree. His parents are actually police officers. The novels reveal him to be more perverted and intelligent than the anime suggests, a trait noted by Nadeko. Prior to the events of Kizumonogatari and Bakemonogatari, he had isolated himself, losing faith in both people and himself, though his interactions with others gradually help him reconnect.
