Summary

Okita Juuzou, born on December 8, serves as the stern captain of the Yamato, displaying absolute devotion to the mission of saving Earth from the Gamilus threat, even if it costs him his life. He is actually dying and suffers from worsening illness throughout the first season, yet he remains convinced he will survive to return to his homeworld. He views Susumu Kodai much like a substitute for the son he lost in battle, deeply regretting the death of his own son at Pluto as well as the apparent demise of Kodai’s older brother, Mamoru. Even when his condition forces him into bed, he continues to provide counsel to the crew, particularly to Kodai. In the movie Final Yamato, it is revealed that he was placed in cryogenic suspension until Earth physicians could revive and cure him, after which he resumed leading the EDF against the Dingirians. He is based on Leiji Matsumoto’s father, a Major in the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force who flew a Nakajima Ki-84 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
