Summary

Misty, known as Kasumi in Japan, is a fictional character in the Pokémon franchise who has appeared as a Gym Leader in the video games, several seasons of the anime, the Electric Tale of Pikachu and Ash & Pikachu manga series, as well as in toys, books, and other media. At the start of the series, she is ten years old and harbors a slight inferiority complex because her three older sisters, Daisy, Lily, and Violet, dismiss her as the "runt" of the Sensational Sisters, the synchronized swimming trio they perform as. This dynamic shifts over time as she grows closer to Daisy, the most motherly of the sisters, who typically handle Cerulean Gym issues, although Misty herself battled Ash for his Cascade Badge. Initially, Misty is depicted with a wicked temper, spoiled attitude, stubbornness, and little patience, but she gradually reveals herself to be kind and sensible as the series progresses. She often reins in Brock when he becomes enamored with cute girls by pulling his ear, a role later assumed by Max, Brock’s Bonsly, and Croagunk. She shares a slight rivalry with Ash in some episodes, is terrified of Bug-type Pokémon, and dislikes carrots and peppers, while loving Water-type Pokémon and being barefoot. Despite her sisters' ridicule, she aims to become a world-class Water-type trainer, a goal reflected in her well-trained Pokémon, and she admires Ice-type trainer Lorelei. She is also good friends with Sakura, another girl with older sisters who treat her like a child. When a Pokémon egg hatches into Togepi, the creature chooses Misty as its "mother," so she keeps it despite Ash winning it in a mini-tournament involving him, Misty, Brock, and Meowth. Misty takes on a motherly role, remaining virtually inseparable from Togepi in subsequent seasons. Although she is the leader of the Cerulean Gym in the games, she left it to her sisters before traveling with Ash in the animated series. Their first meeting occurs when she fishes Ash and Pikachu out of a river. Ash later "borrows" her bike to escape wild Spearow, resulting in its destruction by Pikachu’s Thundershock. Misty uses the destroyed bike as an excuse to travel with Ash until he replaces it, though she eventually forgets why she started traveling with him in the first place. After retrieving her bike at the end of the Johto League Silver Conference, Misty returns to Cerulean Gym to resume her duties as Gym Leader while her sisters go on a world cruise. Consequently, she is not a main part of the Advanced Generation series, appearing in only five episodes and the 10th Anniversary special The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon, though she is central to Pokémon Chronicles. In one Advanced Generation appearance, her Togepi evolves into Togetic, which Misty releases after it chooses to stay behind to defend the Mirage Kingdom. After Ash finishes the Hoenn League, he returns to Pallet Town to find Misty waiting, joined by May, Max, and Brock for the Battle Frontier challenges. She remains with his group for three episodes before returning to her gym.
