Japan

Summary

The nation of Japan, whose human guise is Kiku Honda, presents as a reserved young man with black hair and brown, soulless eyes. Standing at 165cm, he hails from Tokyo and celebrates his national day on February 11th, with the Cherry Blossom and Chrysanthemum serving as his national flowers. His age remains a closely guarded secret, though his blood type is likely A positive. Historically, Japan was once a hikikomori and part of the Axis Powers, but he has since evolved into one of the world’s most prosperous nations. Originally raised by China, who viewed him as a younger brother, Japan severed ties and turned hostile, attacking China with a katana and becoming wartime enemies. While China still harbors affection for him, Japan remains completely indifferent. He maintains friendly relations with countries such as America, England, Greece, Turkey, and the Netherlands, who often look out for him. Creator Hidekaz Himaruya notes that Japan would likely get along well with Romano and Prussia, whom he addresses with the casual kun honorific rather than the respectful san. Conversely, his relationship with Russia is hostile; Russia’s mere presence causes Japan physical pain, stemming from a past curse. When Germany allied with Russia, Japan’s dismay led him to attempt assassination, including hiding in ceilings to harpoon Russia, whom he describes as a nuclear monster that breathes fire and destroys buildings. Personality-wise, Japan is serious, quiet, and mysterious, yet also hard-working, intelligent, and skilled. He is somewhat prudish and shy, often acting like an old man or an otaku. His standard responses include "I will consider it," "Maybe next time," and "My answer is always ‘no.’" Though typically calm, his rare anger is terrifying. Having spent years as a shut-in, he is eager to learn about the outside world and admitted to England, France, and Greece that he prefers 2D girls over real women. He loves animals, owning a dog named Pochi-kun, a guinea pig, and a rabbit. He enjoys meat buns, soft textures, and hobbies like watching seasonal changes and developing technology, but he is terrified of cockroaches. Japan finds his own culture normal but struggles to understand Western norms, being appalled by nudity despite possessing erotic woodblock prints. His name holds symbolic weight: "Kiku" means chrysanthemum, and his surname Honda shares the kanji for "hon" with Nihon, the Japanese name for Japan.
