Summary

Katsura, Kotarou is a man in his twenties, born on June 26 under the Cancer sign. He stands 175 cm tall, weighs 56 kg, and has AB blood type. He was Gintoki’s former comrade during the Joi war and continues to resist the Amanto after their takeover of Japan, having amassed a loyal band of followers. A wanted man involved in terrorist activities against the Bakufu, he is constantly pursued by the Shinsengumi. His weapon of choice is a metallic grenade. While his early methods were violent, such as bombing an Amanto embassy, he has evolved to believe that destroying the country is not the answer, seeking a way to change it without causing further sacrifices. Respected by his followers as the "Daybreak of the Joui Faction," Katsura gained even more admiration when others believed he died during the Benizakura arc, prompting various terrorist groups to avenge him. As a fugitive, he often wears disguises, though his identity is frequently exposed. He enjoys dressing as a pirate, complete with an eyepatch featuring a skull design over his left eye and a scar on his right cheek, adopting the alias 'Space Captain Katsura.' He possesses an outdated sense of humor, once trying to buy a Famicon during the hype for the OwEe, and has a habit of telling dramatic stories that move others to tears, except for Gintoki. To fund his activities, Katsura occasionally takes odd jobs, such as in Episode 88. In Episode 39, he claims his heart was moved by Ikumatsu and held an interview at her ramen restaurant. In the Japanese version, Gintoki often calls him "Zura," a pun on the word for wig, while the English version initially used "Casserole" or "Cough syrup" before switching back to "Zura." Regardless of the language, Katsura indignantly insists on being called Katsura, possessing an uncanny ability to detect when someone uses any other name, even in their thoughts, as seen in Episode 25. His name is based on the historical Katsura Kogoro.
