Summary
Hiraga Gengai, a Sagittarius born on December 18, stands at 159 cm and weighs 55 kg. Recognized as Edo’s most skilled mechanic and inventor, he frequently lends his expertise to Sakata Gintoki and the Yorozuya. Gengai constructs crude and unappealing machines based on his philosophy that "The machines of men are armour, cannons and caterpillars." He has a notorious habit of modifying any item within reach without explaining the necessary safety instructions, which often leads to dangerous situations for the unsuspecting users. First appearing in episode 17, Gengai initially seems like an ordinary mechanic until the Yorozuya discovers the tragic truth behind his work. His only son, Hiraga Saburou, died during the Joui wars, leaving Gengai with profound emotional scars. Takasugi Shinsuke exploited this grief, manipulating Gengai to attack a festival attended by the Shogun. The Yorozuya and the Shinsengumi intervened to stop the assault, eventually convincing Gengai that seeking revenge against the Bakufu was not the correct path. Currently, Gengai runs Machine Hall, a workshop and inventor’s office where he is often tasked with repairing Gintoki’s scooter. Despite his legitimate business, he remains a fugitive from the law, as evidenced by a wanted poster displayed at the end of episode 17 and confirmed by Gintoki in episode 67.
