Gourry Inverse is a traveling swordsman who crosses paths with Lina Inverse in the opening episode of the anime, deciding to accompany her thereafter. He wields the legendary Sword of Light, a weapon originally called Gorun Nova before entering the Slayers world. Although he lacks scholarly aptitude and suffers from significant memory issues and attention deficits, his combat prowess as a swordsman remains unparalleled throughout the series. His manga profile describes him as being "as loyal as man's best friend but not quite as smart." After meeting Lina, he pledges to serve as the "little girl's" unpaid bodyguard, despite his disappointment regarding her physical development, and the two gradually grow closer. While Gourry displays kindness, such as sparing his rival Zangulus multiple times, along with absolute loyalty to Lina and general consideration for others, his nature is less idealistic than that of the Seyruuns. Though effective with standard steel, Gourry becomes immensely powerful when wielding his family's magic blade. As the keeper of the Sword of Light, a mystical weapon featuring a detachable steel blade, he can summon an alternate blade made of pure, destructive light fueled by willpower. This sword can effortlessly defeat lower-ranked demons and absorbs magic; if a spell is cast directly onto it, its power combines with that of the spell. Gourry treats the relic with great care, guarding it jealously from thieves, particularly Lina, who frequently tries to trick him into surrendering it by claiming he already promised it to her. These instances highlight the few moments where Gourry's unreliable memory is perfectly clear. He will, however, allow Lina to borrow the sword in extreme situations. By the conclusion of the third series, Gourry relinquishes the Sword of Light to ensure its safety along with other light weapons. In the subsequent book series, he obtains the Blast Sword. By manipulating the magical energies surrounding it, he creates an exceptionally sharp blade. This weapon requires careful handling, as it can cut through its own sheath or sink up to its hilt into the ground if mishandled. An enchantment placed on the sword by the party allows them to restore its sharpness when needed. Gourry eventually develops romantic feelings for Lina. Although he is not as reserved about these emotions as the young sorceress, he seemingly lacks the knowledge of how to make a romantic advance, adding to the list of things he does not know.
