After robbing a group of bandits, Lina Inverse—a self-proclaimed genius sorceress who also considers herself quite beautiful—sets off a fireball in the middle of the confused thieves' camp before heading toward Atlas City in search of more loot. However, the surviving bandits soon launch a surprise attack on her, seeking revenge. Just as Lina is about to deal with them, a wandering mercenary shows up, mistaking her for a damsel in need of rescue. Lina takes advantage of this misunderstanding, letting the swordsman Gourry Gabriev do all the fighting. But she quickly regrets her choice when Gourry insists on faithfully escorting her for the rest of the journey. Despite her misgivings, Gourry's help proves valuable when the rightful owners of the stolen goods come to reclaim their property. It becomes clear that the item they're after is under magical surveillance and connected to important figures involved in a growing scandal. Lina realizes that she now holds something far more significant than just valuable treasure.

Background

The first eight volumes of Slayers were published in English by Tokyopop from September 7, 2004 to January 2, 2008. On July 3, 2020, J-Novel Club announced it had licensed the series; the light novel has been rereleased digitally since August 17, 2020, and in print as hardcover 3-in-1 omnibus volumes since July 20, 2021. The series has received multiple video and tabletop game adaptations, as well as various cameos in other media.
